Seiko 5 buying guide: what the 5 means, old vs new models, 21 jewels, water resistance and how to check an original Seiko 5 automatic.
What does the “5” in Seiko 5 mean?
The story starts in 1963 with the Seiko Sportsmatic 5, the first Seiko automatic with a day-date display. Its name, and later “Seiko 5”, stood for five attributes. As described by the Seiko Museum Ginza, they were:
- automatic (self-winding) movement;
- water resistance;
- day and date shown in one window at 3 o’clock;
- a crown tucked in at the 4 o’clock position;
- a sturdy, masculine design with a metal bracelet.
In 1968 Seiko added the Seiko 5 Sports line, with sportier cases and rotating bezels. Since then “Seiko 5” has covered a huge range of affordable automatics, which is why old and new Seiko 5 watches can be very different.
Old vs new: the main Seiko 5 generations
Vintage Seiko 5 (late 1960s to 1990s)
These are the “Seiko 5 old model” watches you still see in the second-hand market. Common calibres include:
- 6119: 21 jewels, introduced around 1967 and made into the mid-1970s.
- 6309: 17 jewels, made from 1976 to 1988, used in Seiko 5 Sports models as well as divers.
- 7009: 17 jewels, a long-running workhorse from about the late 1970s to the mid-1990s.
None of these hacks (stops the seconds hand when you set the time), and none can be wound by hand: you wind them by wearing them or gently swinging them. Note that not every old Seiko 5 is “21 jewels”.
The 7S26 and 7S36 era (SNK and SNZ models)
Calibre 7S26 arrived in 1996 with 21 jewels, beating at 21,600 vibrations per hour. It powers many Seiko 5 models such as the SNK range, as well as the well-known SKX divers. Like the vintage calibres, it does not hack or hand-wind. The closely related 7S36 has 23 jewels and is found in Seiko 5 SNZ models (including SNZG) and some divers. When people search for a “Seiko 5 automatic 21 jewels”, they usually mean a 7S26 watch.
Seiko 5 Sports from 2019 (4R36)
In 2019 Seiko completely relaunched the Seiko 5 Sports collection with 27 models in five styles. These use the calibre 4R36: 24 jewels, about 41 hours of power reserve, and two features older Seiko 5s lacked, hacking seconds and hand-winding. The cases are water resistant to 10 bar (100 m). On the popular SRPD models the case is 42.5 mm wide with a push-pull (not screw-down) crown at 4 o’clock, protected by crown guards.
Seiko 5 Sports GMT (4R34)
In 2022 Seiko added the first GMT models to the Seiko 5 Sports range (SSK001, SSK003 and SSK005), using calibre 4R34 with 24 jewels, a 41-hour power reserve and 10 bar water resistance. Field-style GMT versions such as the SSK023 and SSK025 followed in late 2023.
What does “21 jewels” mean?
Jewels are tiny synthetic rubies used as bearings at the points in a movement where parts turn, reducing friction and wear. A jewel count tells you how many bearings the design uses, not how good or valuable the watch is. A 21-jewel 7S26, a 23-jewel 7S36 and a 24-jewel 4R36 are all reliable movements; the bigger practical differences are hacking and hand-winding.
Is Seiko 5 waterproof?
No watch is truly “waterproof”, and Seiko itself says water resistance is not permanently guaranteed, because seals age and shocks can deform parts. Read the caseback and use Seiko’s own guidance:
- WATER RESISTANT (no bar figure, 3 bar): handles splashes and rain only. Not for swimming.
- 5 bar (50 m): suitable for swimming and showering.
- 10 bar (100 m), as on the 2019 Seiko 5 Sports: suitable for swimming and diving without an air cylinder.
Never operate the crown in water or wash the watch with the crown pulled out. On a vintage Seiko 5, treat water resistance as unknown until a watchmaker has replaced or tested the seals.
Why is the crown at 4 o’clock?
The tucked-in crown at 4 o’clock is one of the original five Seiko 5 features. It keeps the crown out of the way of your wrist. On 7S26 and older watches the crown is only used for setting the time and date, because these movements can’t be wound by hand. On 4R36 watches you can also wind the watch with the crown.
How to check an original Seiko 5
Read the caseback
Most Seiko casebacks carry a code such as 7S26-0020. The part before the dash is the calibre; the part after is the case design. That calibre must match the movement inside and the style of the dial. The six-digit serial gives a production date: the first digit is the year (you work out the decade from the calibre) and the second is the month, with 1–9 for January to September, 0 for October, N for November and D for December.
Check the functions
The movement should behave like the calibre on the caseback. A watch sold as a 4R36 should hand-wind and hack. A 7S26 or vintage 6309 should not. A watch that behaves differently from its caseback may have had its movement swapped.
Look hard at the dial
Redialled vintage Seikos, where an old dial has been repainted or reprinted, are a known problem in the vintage market, as are “frankens” assembled from mixed parts. Typical redial signs are stencilled or hand-painted text with paint bleeding past the edges, wrong or inconsistent fonts, and a sunburst finish that has been painted over. Original printing is sharp and even. A redial isn’t the same as a fake, but it lowers value and should always be disclosed.

Servicing a Seiko 5
Seiko 5 movements are robust, but they are still mechanical. If a used watch has no service history, expect it may need cleaning and oiling, and on a vintage watch new seals before it goes near water. Ask the seller how the watch keeps time and whether the day and date change properly.
Choosing a size
Seiko 5 models range from compact dress-style watches to sporty pieces like the 42.5 mm SRPD. Check the case diameter and how the lugs sit on your wrist before you buy. If you’re unsure, ask us for a wrist shot or a video of the exact watch.
Seiko 5 price in Pakistan: what changes it
We don’t quote prices in our guides, because each watch is different. Prices depend on the generation and calibre, condition, whether the dial and bracelet are original, the service history, and whether a box is included. A clean, unmodified vintage Seiko 5 with an original dial is worth more than a redialled one that looks shinier.
Frequently asked questions
Is Seiko 5 a good watch?
Yes, for most people. Seiko 5 has been an affordable, tough everyday automatic for decades. Newer 4R36 models add hacking and hand-winding, while older ones are simple and durable. To see how Seiko compares with its main Japanese rival, read Seiko vs Citizen compared.
Is Seiko 5 waterproof?
It is water resistant, not waterproof. Check the caseback: “Water Resistant” alone means splashes only, 5 bar is fine for swimming, and 10 bar covers swimming and diving without an air cylinder. Old watches should be tested first.
Why does my Seiko 5 stop when I take it off?
It is an automatic, so it runs on energy stored by your wrist movement. A 4R36 holds roughly 41 hours of reserve. Older calibres can’t be wound by hand, so give them a gentle swing to start them. Learn more in our guide to automatic vs quartz vs hand-wind movements.
Can I wind a Seiko 5 by hand?
Only the newer 4R-calibre models, such as the 2019 Seiko 5 Sports with the 4R36. The 7S26, 7S36 and vintage calibres like the 6309 and 7009 cannot be hand-wound.
How do I know how old my Seiko 5 is?
Use the first two digits of the caseback serial (year and month), together with the calibre code to work out the decade.
