Ask any watch enthusiast for the best value in watchmaking and you will usually hear two names: Seiko and Citizen. Both are Japanese, both make their own movements, and both have loyal fans in Pakistan. So which should you buy?
Seiko: the mechanical all-rounder
Seiko traces its roots to 1881, when Kintaro Hattori opened a watch and jewellery shop in Tokyo. In 1969 it launched the Astron, the world’s first quartz wristwatch — a watch that changed the whole industry. Today Seiko is loved for its affordable automatics: the Seiko 5 range, the Presage dress watches and the famous Prospex divers.
- Best for: your first automatic, dive watches, great-looking dials for the money.
- Going upmarket: Grand Seiko, the brand’s luxury line, is admired for its finishing.
Citizen: the master of light
Citizen was founded in Tokyo in 1918 and named its first pocket watch “Citizen” so that it would be a watch for everyone. Its signature technology is Eco-Drive: quartz watches powered by light, from sunlight to a desk lamp, so you rarely need a battery change. Citizen also makes Promaster sports watches and elegant dress models.
- Best for: low-maintenance, accurate daily wear; titanium models that are light on the wrist.
