Rado Watches Buying Guide: DiaStar, Captain Cook, Centrix, True and More

Rado watch buying guide: the main Rado watch models, their materials and movements, and how to choose an original Rado new, pre-owned or vintage.

Rado watch buying guide: the main Rado watch models, their materials and movements, and how to choose an original Rado new, pre-owned or vintage.

Why Rado is different

Rado has built its name on materials. In 1962 the DiaStar used a hardmetal case (tungsten carbide with a metal binder) and a sapphire crystal, and Rado called it the world’s first scratch-resistant watch. In 1986 the Integral became, in Rado’s words, the world’s first watch collection made in high-tech ceramic. Today high-tech ceramic shapes nearly all of Rado’s collections. That history explains why Rado watches feel different on the wrist and why so many people in Pakistan look for them. If you want the background on the material itself, read why Rado ceramic watches are so popular.

Rado’s three key materials

  • High-tech ceramic: a dense, non-porous ceramic fired at high temperature. It is scratch-resistant, light and smooth, and it warms to body temperature. Rado also makes a “plasma” version: white ceramic treated with carbon to give a metallic grey look without any metal.
  • Hardmetal: Rado’s first high-tech material, used from 1962 on the DiaStar. It is very hard and noticeably heavy.
  • Ceramos: a composite made mainly of titanium carbide, combining ceramic-like hardness with metal-like toughness. Rado first used it in 1993 and still uses it, for example on the redesigned DiaStar Original from 2022.

Rado movements: quartz and automatic

Many Rado watches, especially slim and dress models, are quartz. Rado’s current automatics use their own named calibres. For example, the Captain Cook Automatic, Centrix Automatic and Coupole Automatic use calibre R763, which Rado lists with an 80-hour power reserve and an antimagnetic Nivachron hairspring. Skeleton models such as the Captain Cook High-Tech Ceramic Skeleton use calibre R808, also with 80 hours of reserve. The DiaStar Original Automatic uses calibre R586, with a 48-hour reserve. Rado says the moving anchor symbol on the dial now appears on all its automatic watches. Always check the exact reference on rado.com, because movements differ within a family.

Rado watch models: the main families

DiaStar

The original scratch-resistant Rado, with its rounded case and faceted sapphire crystal. It is made in both quartz and automatic versions, and older DiaStars are among the most common pre-owned Rados in Pakistan. Before buying one, read our guide on how to check an original Rado DiaStar, or browse our Rado DiaStar collection.

Suits: anyone who wants a classic, tough everyday Rado with real history.

Captain Cook

The Captain Cook was a Rado dive watch, made from 1962 to 1968. Rado revived it in 2017 in a 37 mm vintage-style version and a larger 45 mm one, and the family has since grown. Today’s Captain Cook Automatic, for example, has a 42 mm steel case, a rotating bezel with a high-tech ceramic insert and an 80-hour automatic movement. It is the sportiest Rado.

Suits: men who want a sporty automatic with vintage character.

Centrix

A dressy everyday line that mixes steel with high-tech ceramic. The Centrix Automatic R30017302, for example, is 39.5 mm wide and 11.3 mm thick, with calibre R763 and 50 m water resistance.

Suits: office wear and anyone who wants a versatile mid-size Rado.

True and True Thinline

The True family is built around high-tech ceramic. The True Thinline, launched in 2011, has a ceramic case only 5 mm thick on the quartz versions (Rado called it the world’s thinnest high-tech ceramic dress watch). Automatic and diamond-set versions are thicker. A typical True Thinline is 39 mm wide with 30 m water resistance.

Suits: people who want a light, all-ceramic dress watch.

HyperChrome

A modern ceramic line, including chronographs, known for its one-piece (monobloc) high-tech ceramic case. Rado makes it by injecting ceramic into a mould under very high pressure and then sintering it. Some versions add gold-coloured Ceramos on the bezel and bracelet links.

Suits: men who want a bold ceramic watch, including chronographs.

Integral

The 1986 line that started Rado’s ceramic story: Rado calls it the world’s first watch collection in high-tech ceramic. Rado marked the Integral’s 40th anniversary in 2026 with a new anniversary edition.

Suits: lovers of 1980s design and of Rado’s ceramic heritage.

Coupole and Florence

These are Rado’s classic steel lines. The Coupole Automatic R22877025, for example, is 41 mm wide with calibre R763. Florence models are quartz and often diamond-set: the Florence Diamonds R48912703 is a 38 mm steel quartz watch with a sapphire crystal that runs to the edge of the case.

Suits: buyers who want a traditional-looking Rado; Florence is popular for women.

Jubilé

Jubilé is not a separate family. It is a name added to models in several lines, such as DiaStar Jubilé, Integral Jubilé and Sintra Jubilé, and it usually appears on diamond-set versions. For example, the Integral Chronograph Jubilé has 30 diamonds set in its steel case. Check the reference to know exactly which watch you are looking at.

Vintage Rado: Golden Horse, Green Horse, Voyager

Rado’s first collection, in 1957, included the Golden Horse, made in stainless steel at a time when many fine watches were gold. It had an acrylic crystal. Vintage names such as Green Horse and Voyager also turn up often on second-hand Rado automatics. With any vintage Rado, condition and originality matter more than the name on the dial. Rado watches for men: which size?

Rado’s current men’s models range from around 37 mm (the vintage-style Captain Cook) to 42 mm and above (Captain Cook, HyperChrome). Remember that ceramic watches feel lighter than steel ones of the same size, and hardmetal ones heavier. Square and rectangular watches wear differently from round ones, so check both the width and the length in the listing.

New, pre-owned or vintage?

  • New: Rado lists a five-year international warranty on its new watches.
  • Pre-owned: often the best value. Ceramic and hardmetal resist scratches, so many used Rados still look very good. Check that the bracelet is complete and fits your wrist. See our pre-owned watches.
  • Vintage: a chance to own a piece of Rado’s history, but service history and dial originality need careful checking.

Whatever you choose, our guide to how we grade watches explains what each condition label means on our listings.

Rado watch price in Pakistan: what affects it

We don’t list prices in our guides, because they change with each watch. The main factors are:

  • the family and material (high-tech ceramic, Ceramos, hardmetal or steel);
  • automatic or quartz movement;
  • diamond setting;
  • condition, especially chips on ceramic or hardmetal, and a complete bracelet;
  • box, papers and service history.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Rado watch?

It depends on how you’ll wear it. For a tough classic, the DiaStar. For a sporty automatic, the Captain Cook. For a light ceramic dress watch, the True Thinline. For an all-round office watch, the Centrix.

Are Rado ceramic watches scratch-resistant?

Yes. High-tech ceramic resists scratches very well. Like any very hard material, it can chip or crack if knocked hard, so avoid drops onto hard floors.

Is Rado automatic or quartz?

Both. Many slim and dress models are quartz, while sporty and classic lines offer automatic versions with calibres such as the R763. Rado says every Rado automatic has the moving anchor on the dial.

How can I tell if a Rado is original?

Check the reference number against rado.com, the weight and feel of the material, the crystal and the dial printing, and buy from a seller who lets you inspect the watch. Our general fake-spotting checklist covers the basics.

Do you buy Rado watches?

Yes. We buy and trade in watches, including Rado. Send us the details through our sell your watch page.
