Buying a Pre-owned Omega: Seamaster, Speedmaster, Constellation or De Ville?

Omega offers more heritage per rupee than almost any luxury brand. Here is a simple guide to its four big families — and what to check when buying pre-owned.

Omega is one of the most important names in Swiss watchmaking — official timekeeper at many Olympic Games, and the watch that went to the Moon. Pre-owned, it offers remarkable value. Here are the four families you will meet most often.

Speedmaster: the Moonwatch

Launched in 1957 as a racing chronograph, the Speedmaster was worn on the Moon during the Apollo 11 mission in 1969 — and earned its “Moonwatch” nickname. Look for the tachymeter bezel and the three sub-dials. Classic Moonwatch models are hand-wound.

Seamaster: from dress watch to diver

The Seamaster name first appeared in 1948. Today it covers the Seamaster Diver 300M, the Aqua Terra and the Planet Ocean, but older Seamasters include some of the most elegant vintage dress watches you can buy — often at approachable prices.

Constellation: the “claws”

Introduced in 1952, the Constellation was Omega’s precision flagship. The modern look, with the four “griffes” (claws) on the bezel and the integrated bracelet, dates from 1982. Many Constellations are quartz, and many ladies’ models are highly sought after.

De Ville: understated elegance

Born as the Seamaster De Ville in 1960 and a collection of its own from 1967, the De Ville line is Omega’s classic dress family — Prestige, Trésor and the vintage models loved for their slim cases.

What to check when buying pre-owned Omega

  • Movement matches the model. A Constellation quartz is normal; a “Speedmaster Moonwatch” with a quartz tick is not.
  • Serial numbers and papers should match.
  • Bracelet stretch on older integrated bracelets — ask for a close-up.
  • Service history. A recent service adds peace of mind.
