Why Rado’s Ceramic Watches Are So Popular

Scratch-resistant, light and unmistakably modern — Rado built its name on materials. Here is why its ceramic watches have such a loyal following.

Walk into any watch shop in Pakistan and you’ll find Rado. The Swiss brand from Lengnau has a reputation for one thing above all: materials. For decades it has chased a single idea — a watch that stays beautiful no matter how you wear it.

From “DiaStar” to high-tech ceramic

In 1962 Rado launched the DiaStar, promoted as a scratch-resistant watch thanks to its hardmetal case. In 1986 came the Integral, using high-tech ceramic — a material that is very hard, light and comfortable on the skin. Ceramic has been at the heart of Rado ever since.

Why ceramic?

  • Scratch resistance: everyday knocks that mark steel usually leave ceramic untouched.
  • Lightness and comfort: ceramic feels warm and light on the wrist — welcome in summer.
  • Colour that lasts: black, white and grey ceramic keeps its colour and shine.

One thing to know: ceramic is very hard, but it can crack if dropped on a hard floor. Treat it like fine porcelain.

Collections to know

  • True / True Thinline: clean, minimalist ceramic designs — including open-heart and skeleton models.
  • Centrix: ceramic combined with steel for a dressier look.
  • Captain Cook: a revived 1960s diver, with a ceramic bezel.
  • HyperChrome and Integral: bold, integrated ceramic bracelets.

Buying pre-owned Rado

Because ceramic resists scratches, pre-owned Rado pieces often look close to new. Check the bracelet for any chipped links, confirm that spare links are included (ceramic links can be costly to replace), and ask for a close-up of the crystal edges.
