About Franck Muller

Franck Muller is a Geneva watch brand named after the Swiss watchmaker who founded it with Vartan Sirmakes in the early 1990s. The company is based at “Watchland” in Genthod, near Geneva, and its dials are signed “Franck Muller Genève”. The brand is known for its curved tonneau cases, its bold, distinctive numerals and its complicated watches.

The Cintrée Curvex case

Franck Muller’s signature case is the Cintrée Curvex, a three-dimensional tonneau (barrel) shape built from three balancing curves. The brand dates its introduction to 1992. The Vanguard takes this curved-case idea and makes it bigger and sportier.

The Vanguard in brief

Franck Muller introduced the Vanguard in 2013. It quickly became one of the brand’s best-known lines, with versions in steel, titanium, gold and other materials, and many complications from simple date models to skeletons, chronographs and tourbillons.

Franck Muller Vanguard V45 and other sizes

The model number tells you the size. The V45 is the standard men’s model, roughly 44–45 mm wide and 53.7 mm long. Smaller sizes such as the V41 and V32 also exist. Measurements can differ slightly between sources and versions, so check the exact reference.

Movement

The classic Vanguard V45 SC DT (seconds and date) uses an automatic movement listed as calibre FM 0800, beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour with about 42 hours of power reserve. Complicated versions use different movements, so the movement must match the reference on the caseback.

Strap and dial

The Vanguard’s strap is integrated into the case and fixed with two hidden screws rather than standard spring bars. Many versions pair a leather or fabric outer layer with rubber on the inside. The dial uses bold applied numerals and chunky hands.

Casablanca and Long Island

You may also meet two older Franck Muller lines. The Casablanca uses a curved tonneau case inspired by the Cintrée Curvex, with simple functions and an automatic movement. The Long Island is a rectangular, Art Deco-style dress watch, made in quartz and mechanical versions.

Why you need to be careful with the Vanguard

Franck Muller is often named among the most copied luxury brands, and the Vanguard’s bold shape makes it an easy target. Copies trade on that familiar look. Up close, though, genuine and fake watches differ in case precision, dial work and movement. This guide covers Vanguard-specific checks; for the general basics, read our general fake-spotting checklist.

How to check an original Franck Muller Vanguard: 7 checks

1. The case curves

The curved case is the hardest part of a Franck Muller to copy. On a genuine Vanguard the curves flow smoothly from every angle, and the finish changes cleanly between surfaces. Cases that look flat, angular or uneven, or show seams and rough transitions, are warning signs. Compare the watch carefully with official photos of the same reference.

2. Caseback engravings and serial

A genuine caseback has deep, sharp, evenly cut engraving, including “Franck Muller Genève”, the reference and an individual “No.” serial. Shallow or uneven engraving, wrong fonts or poor spacing are red flags. The reference must match the watch’s actual features, and the serial must match the warranty card.

3. Numerals and dial printing

The numerals should be applied (raised), neatly finished and evenly spaced, with no glue showing at the base. Text on the dial must be crisp, centred and free of bleeding under a loupe. Printed or uneven numerals and fuzzy text suggest a fake.

4. Strap fit and buckle

The integrated strap should sit flush against the case with no gaps. The buckle or deployant clasp should be cleanly made and signed. A strap that looks glossy, stiff or roughly moulded, or a light, flimsy clasp, deserves a closer look.

5. Crystal

The Vanguard has a sapphire crystal shaped to follow the case. A crystal that looks too flat or too domed, or scratches easily like mineral glass, is a warning sign.

6. Movement behaviour

An automatic Vanguard such as the V45 SC DT should have a smooth seconds sweep. A seconds hand that ticks once a second means quartz, which is wrong for an automatic reference. A watchmaker who opens the case can also see whether the movement is the right calibre and properly finished.

7. Papers and seller

The model number on the caseback should match the papers, but high-end fakes copy papers too. Treat them as one check among several. The seller matters most: buy where you can inspect the watch and get clear answers.

Questions to ask before you buy

  • What is the full reference, and does it match the caseback?
  • Is there a warranty card with the same serial?
  • Has the dial been modified or diamond-set after leaving the factory? Aftermarket diamonds aren’t automatically fake, but they change value.
  • When was the watch last serviced?
  • Is the strap original, and is the buckle included?
  • Can I see a live video of this exact watch?

Servicing a Vanguard

A Vanguard is a mechanical luxury watch and needs servicing like any other. Franck Muller’s integrated strap uses hidden screws, so strap changes and servicing are best left to an experienced watchmaker or an authorised Franck Muller service point. Ask for the service history when you buy.

Franck Muller Vanguard price in Pakistan: what affects it

We don’t quote prices in our guides. The main factors are the size and complication, the case material (steel, titanium or gold), diamond setting (factory or aftermarket), condition of the case and strap, and whether box and papers are included. When you compare Franck Muller watch prices in Pakistan, compare the same reference and condition, and treat any Vanguard priced far below similar watches with caution.

Frequently asked questions

What does V45 mean on a Franck Muller Vanguard?

It refers to the case size: the V45 is the standard men’s Vanguard, about 44–45 mm wide. Smaller sizes such as the V41 and V32 follow the same naming.

Is the Franck Muller Vanguard automatic?

Most men’s Vanguards are automatic. The V45 SC DT, for example, uses the automatic calibre FM 0800 with around 42 hours of power reserve. Check the exact reference for the movement inside.

When was the Vanguard launched?

Franck Muller introduced the Vanguard in 2013.

How can I check a Franck Muller serial number?

Make sure the “No.” serial on the caseback is cleanly engraved and matches the warranty card. For confirmation, an authorised Franck Muller retailer or service point can help.
