Watch Size Guide: Which Case Size Suits Your Wrist?

36mm, 40mm, 44mm — which is right for you? A simple guide to case diameter, lug-to-lug and thickness, so your next watch fits perfectly.

When you buy online, size is the one thing photos can’t show properly. A watch that looks perfect in a picture can wear too big — or disappear on the wrist. Here is how to choose.

Measure your wrist

Wrap a strip of paper around your wrist where you wear a watch, mark it, and measure it flat. Most men’s wrists are between 16 and 19cm; most women’s between 14 and 17cm.

Case diameter: a rough guide

Wrist Dress watch Everyday / sports
Under 16cm 26–36mm 34–38mm
16–18cm 36–39mm 38–41mm
Over 18cm 38–41mm 41–44mm

These are guidelines, not rules. Plenty of people love a small vintage watch on a big wrist, or a bold diver on a slim one.

Lug-to-lug matters more than diameter

The distance from the top lug to the bottom lug decides whether a watch fits across your wrist. If the lugs hang over the edges, it looks too big — even at 38mm. Integrated-bracelet designs and cushion cases can wear larger than their diameter suggests.

Thickness and dial

A thin dress watch slides under a shirt cuff; a thick diver doesn’t. And watches with a wide bezel (like many divers) look smaller than their number, while thin-bezel dress watches with big dials look larger.

Women’s watches

Classic ladies’ sizes run from about 26 to 34mm, but many women now choose 34–38mm “mid-size” or even men’s watches. Wear what you love.
