Watch Care in Pakistan: Heat, Dust, Humidity and Everyday Wear

Karachi humidity, Lahore summers, dusty roads — Pakistani weather is hard on watches. A few simple habits keep yours running beautifully for decades.

A good watch can last a lifetime — if it is looked after. Pakistani weather adds a few challenges: heat, humidity near the coast, dust almost everywhere. Here is how to keep your watch in top shape.

Keep it dry (really)

“Water resistant” is not the same as waterproof, and gaskets age. Unless your watch is a diver that has recently been pressure-tested, keep it away from showers, pools and the sea. Never press chronograph pushers or open the crown when the watch is wet. Hot showers are especially bad: steam gets in where water can’t.

Screw the crown down

If your watch has a screw-down crown, always screw it back in after setting the time. It is the main seal against dust and moisture.

Beat the dust

Wipe your watch with a soft microfibre cloth at the end of the day. For metal bracelets, a soft toothbrush removes grime from between the links — dry, or very lightly damp on a water-resistant watch only.

Heat and leather straps

Summer sweat is hard on leather. Let straps air-dry overnight instead of putting the watch straight into a box, and rotate to a metal bracelet or rubber strap on the hottest days. Never leave a watch in a parked car in summer: extreme heat can dry out oils and damage batteries.

Magnets: the hidden enemy

Phone speakers, laptop lids and magnetic bag clasps can magnetise a mechanical watch and make it run very fast. Don’t store your watch on top of electronics. A watchmaker can demagnetise it in minutes.

Automatic watches: wear them or wind them

If an automatic stops, give the crown 20–30 turns before setting the time. Avoid changing the date between roughly 9pm and 3am on many mechanical watches, when the date wheel is engaged.

Quartz: change batteries on time

When the seconds hand starts jumping in 4-second steps on many quartz watches, the battery is low. Replace it quickly — an old battery can leak and damage the movement.

Service every few years

Mechanical watches need fresh oils and seals every several years, depending on the brand. A service keeps timekeeping accurate and water resistance reliable.
