How to Check an Original Rolex in Pakistan: 12 Checks Before You Buy

How to check an original Rolex in Pakistan: 12 checks on serials, engravings, movement and papers before you buy a new or used Rolex.

How to check an original Rolex in Pakistan: 12 checks on serials, engravings, movement and papers before you buy a new or used Rolex.

Start with two numbers

The reference number identifies the model; the serial number belongs to that one watch only. Most checks below come back to one question: do the numbers, dial, bezel, bracelet and papers all describe the same watch? For the basics that apply to any luxury watch, read our general fake-spotting checklist first.

The 12 checks

1. Find the serial and reference numbers in the right place for the era

On older Rolex watches, the serial number is engraved on the side of the case between the lugs at 6 o’clock, and the reference number between the lugs at 12 o’clock. Reading them means removing the bracelet, a job for a watchmaker. From 2005 Rolex also began engraving the serial on the inner ring under the crystal (the rehaut), and from 2008 the serial appears only on the rehaut. A recent watch with its serial between the lugs, or an older watch claiming a rehaut serial, needs a good explanation.

Since the early 2010s serials have been random, so a modern serial no longer tells you the year. Genuine engravings are deep and sharp; dotted, shallow, blurred or sandy-looking engraving is a red flag.

2. Look closely at the rehaut

On modern Rolex watches the rehaut is engraved “ROLEX ROLEX ROLEX” all the way round, with the serial number at 6 o’clock. Engraved rehauts first appeared in 2004, became common from 2005, and were on every Oyster reference by 2008. Shallow, uneven or printed-looking letters deserve a second opinion.

3. Search for the tiny crown etched into the crystal

Rolex began laser-etching a tiny crown into the sapphire crystal at 6 o’clock in 1999, starting with the Yacht-Master, and made it standard on almost all models by early 2004. It is designed to be nearly invisible: you usually need a 10x loupe and light angled across the glass to see it. A crown you can spot easily with the naked eye is a warning sign, not a reassurance. A serviced watch may have a replacement crystal, so this is a clue, not proof.

4. Check the Cyclops date magnifier

Rolex introduced the Cyclops lens over the date in 1953 on the Datejust. On a genuine watch it is widely described as magnifying the date about 2.5 times, so the number fills the window. Many fakes use a flatter lens that magnifies much less, leaving a small date floating under the bubble. Know your reference, though: the Deepsea has a date but no Cyclops, and Sea-Dweller models went without one for decades.

5. Watch the seconds hand

A Rolex automatic moves its seconds hand in a smooth sweep made of many small steps every second. A hand that jumps once per second points to a quartz movement. The genuine exception is the Rolex Oysterquartz, introduced in 1977 and produced into the early 2000s, with calibre 5035 in Datejust models and calibre 5055 in Day-Date models. So a ticking Submariner or Daytona is not “a rare quartz Rolex”. Better fakes also sweep, so a smooth sweep proves nothing on its own.

6. Turn it over: most casebacks are solid

The large majority of Rolex references have a solid metal caseback. A glass display back showing the movement, on a model that should have a solid back, is a near-certain sign of a fake. Rolex does make a few exceptions, so check the official specification for the exact reference instead of assuming either way.

7. Read the bracelet and clasp

The Rolex name and crown should be cleanly finished on the clasp, with no misshapen or off-centre logos. Inside the clasp, Rolex bracelets usually carry a stamped code. Between 1976 and 2010 this code indicates the production year, so it should make sense alongside the age of the case. A different year does not automatically mean a fake: bracelets get replaced, and a code ending in “S” marks a genuine service replacement. But a mismatch should be explained, and it can affect value. Codes from around mid-2011 are randomised.

8. Know what the guarantee card should look like

Rolex gives a five-year international guarantee on new watches bought from an Official Rolex Retailer; it was two years until July 2015. The retailer fills in and dates the card at the time of sale. Older watches came with paper documents, later ones with a green credit-card-sized card, and from 2020 Rolex began replacing that with a chip card showing the model, serial number and purchase date but not the buyer’s name. Whatever the era, the reference and serial on the card must match the watch exactly.

9. Remember that papers can be faked too

Boxes and cards are copied too. Papers must fit the watch, the seller’s story and the purchase date, and a “full set” never replaces checking the watch itself.

10. Let a watchmaker open the case

Because no single outside check beats a high-grade fake, the strongest test is a qualified watchmaker opening the caseback. A genuine Rolex movement is finely finished and engraved with the Rolex name. Cloned movements fall short on finishing, regulation and the exact layout of the bridges when seen under magnification. It also shows whether the movement suits the reference and whether parts have been replaced.

11. Ask the seller the right questions

  • What is the exact reference number, and can I see the serial?
  • Where did the watch come from? Is there a receipt or guarantee card?
  • When was it last serviced, and by whom?
  • Are the dial, hands, bezel, crystal and bracelet original to the watch?
  • Can I see a live video of this exact watch, not stock photos?
  • Can my own watchmaker inspect it before I pay in full?

Vague answers, pressure to pay quickly or refusing an inspection are good reasons to walk away.

12. Do a price reality check

We don’t quote figures, because prices move with model, condition, papers and exchange rate. When you research the original Rolex watch price in Pakistan, compare like with like: same reference, same condition, same set. Rolex values are well known, so a used Rolex priced far below similar watches is almost never a lucky find.

Official Rolex retailers and servicing in Pakistan

At the time of writing (October 2026), the store locator on rolex.com lists Official Rolex Retailers in Pakistan, in Karachi and Islamabad, and these listings include servicing among their services. After a full service at an authorised service centre, Rolex issues a service card with a two-year international guarantee. The list can change, so check rolex.com.

Daim Traders is an independent reseller, not an Official Rolex Retailer. We sell new, pre-owned and vintage watches and tell you clearly what comes with each one.

Why buy a used Rolex in Pakistan from a shop with a real address

When a private deal goes wrong, an anonymous seller can simply disappear. A shop with a physical address has a reputation to protect. At Daim Traders:

  • Every watch is inspected by our team before it is listed.
  • You can ask for a live WhatsApp video of the exact watch before it ships.
  • Each listing states its condition in plain words (see how we grade new, like-new, pre-owned and vintage watches).
  • Delivery is free across Pakistan, or you can see the watch in person at our shop in Hyderabad.

Frequently asked questions

How do I do a Rolex serial number check?

First find the serial in the right place for the era (between the lugs at 6 o’clock on older watches, on the rehaut at 6 o’clock on newer ones). Dealer serial charts give an approximate year for watches made before the early 2010s. A serial alone cannot prove a watch is genuine, because fakes copy real serials; the serial, reference, card and watch must all match.

Is a used Rolex without box and papers fake?

Not necessarily. Many genuine older watches have lost their papers. It affects value and means the watch itself needs a closer check, ideally by a watchmaker.

Where can I service a Rolex in Pakistan?

Rolex’s own store locator lists Official Rolex Retailers in Karachi and Islamabad that offer servicing. For the current list and contact details, use the locator on rolex.com.

Do you buy used Rolex watches?

Yes. We buy and trade in watches, including Rolex. Send us the details through our sell your watch page.
